GENERAL PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The master's degree consists of 6 semesters of full-time study. Upon successful completion of the graduate curriculum, the student is awarded the master’s degree and then must complete an 18-week postgraduate internship immediately upon graduation.
CLINICAL EXPERIENCES:
Students have a 6-week full time practicum during the summer and a 4-week full clinical practicum during the mid-semester break. In addition, all students complete a 9-week clinical assignment in the university balance screening and fall prevention program during both professional years of the program. Placements are in facilities located throughout the state. Some out-of-state sites are available.
FACULTY:
There are eight full-time and eight part-time faculty members. Sixty percent of the full-time faculty hold post-professional doctoral degrees, six are engaged in clinical practice. Over the past 3 years, the faculty has averaged four publications in peer-reviewed journals. The full-time faculty to student ratio is 1:12.
ENROLLMENT:
The university enrolls 19,695 students of diverse culture, gender, and age. The physical therapy program accepts 40 students in the fall of each year.
ADMISSION:
The application deadline for the professional program is November 30 for priority consideration. Students are admitted to the program in the fall. Students must hold a baccalaureate degree in another field and meet the prerequisites in order to apply. Prerequisites include 3 semester hours each of statistics, 6 semester hours of psychology; 8 semester hours each of chemistry and physics; and 5 semester hours of physiology. Students must attain a grade of C or better in each course, an overall prerequisite grade point average of 3.0 and an overall grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60 semester units. Additionally, students must have at least 100 hours of volunteer observation in a physical therapy setting, 50 of which must be in a general in-patient setting. 97% of admitted students graduate from the program (3 year average).
TUITION, FEES AND FINANCIAL AID:
Tuition and fees for the 2000-01 academic year were approximately $1,824 for residents and $9,204 for nonresidents. Room and board fees were extra. Tuition is subject to change. Financial aid is available through the Office of Financial Aid. The department of physical therapy also offers several limited scholarships through the student club and community donors. Several local facilities offer forgivable loan contracts. The program also operates a Cooperative Education Program for students interested in working part-time in local physical therapy departments.
STUDENT LIFE:
CaliforniaStateUniversity, Fresno offers limited dormitory housing however, all fraternities and sororities offer housing, and there is a plentiful supply of off-campus housing available with a wide range of rental prices. Athletic programs are abundant, including intramural recreation. Fresno, located 60 miles from YosemiteNational Park and 45 miles from SequoiaNational Park, is within driving distance of the ocean and mountains providing recreational activities that include skiing, hiking, mountain climbing, river rafting, cycling, swimming, and fishing.
